LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING

This is an ongoing, nomadic exhibition in collaboration with MCAD andEXILE books.

It travels through the city of Miami staying at each location for several weeks.

The current one is at Miami Center for Architecture and Design 100 NE 1st Ave.

This project connects Miami architecture, independent publishing, and accessibility, by addressing visual impairments.

Braille is a key component in this exhibition. In this first set of images, we see a few buildings which hold architectural significance all located in downtown. The way they are displayed is as if they printed a braille photograph (tactile relief). The buildings are stripped down to their bare form leaving out anything that detracts the viewer from 'feeling' the structure of the building. These buildings are depicted in a two point perspective which imitates reality. As you walk past each image, you notice the building 'moving'. When you analyze it from different perspectives, the building's form shifts. (example video). It's as if you were walking on the sidewalk in front of the actual building.

The other thing that caught my eye was all the books that were showcased. These are artists' books that aren't available at a regular bookstore. The books themselves are art pieces. These books are very intimate; as I picked up each book, I felt I was in sync with the pertaining artist.  This is an unorthodox exhibition in that it showcases art in a new format. As opposed to the traditional paintings, photographs and sculptures, books are the art. Very fascinating.

To further emphasize the project, an outdoor audio piece is constantly sharing stories about the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (MCAD's home). Along with this audio, on the front steps of the building is the word LISTEN. This word is large, vinyl, floor appliqué that invites passersby to "LISTEN'' to the building.
