Tramas
By: Gustavo Perez Monzon
Presented by: CIFO (Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation)
With the reoccurring theme of texture present in all my visits this week, CIFO hosted a series of works by Cuban artist Gustavo Perez Monzon. This is the first exhibition in the United States for the artist. Gustavo, along with other Cuban artists from the 80's reshaped Cuban art; bringing forth experimental practices that make the viewer question the art itself.
Tramas is a series of works that were created by the artist using the methods of logic, mathematics and numerology. Gustovo, creates works that function like systems sustained by logical order. It is evident that number play a big role in the creation of this series. Some paintings include actual numbers like that on a child's book that entices you to trace along a predetermined path.
Gustavo also likes to play with material like aluminum; which he perforates to create texture and later paint on top of it. He also uses a lot of geometric shapes that give volume to his work. The artist created an installation with simple elements such as string, hooks and rocks. He hung the string from the ceiling and/or high on the wall and then tied rocks to the other ends of the string. He did this several times tangled all the string to create a spiderweb-like atmosphere within the gallery space.
